Oyster Mushroom Extract & Strawberry Extract

Oyster Mushroom Extract Has Powerful Health and Immune Benefits

by Brien Quirk

Director of R & D

  • Potent appetite suppressant

  • Immune boosting effect in elite athletes

  • Antioxidant-antiaging

  • Cardio support

Oyster mushroom is a tasty and unique mushroom that is becoming better known to consumers due to its mild oyster taste and delicate texture. It is unique among mushrooms for having particularly strong cholesterol and triglyceride lowering effects, among other very important health benefits. Oyster mushrooms are of the genus Pleurotus, and commonly known as abalone.

The main species of Oyster Mushroom, Ostreatus pleurotus, is the one most often used medicinally and in cuisine. The large, whitish fruiting body grows on wood in shelf-like growths with wild fruiting bodies that form in the fall and winter in North America, and can appear in pale blue and pink colors.  The mushroom has many bioactive health benefits related to cardiovascular health, including potent cholesterol and lipid lowering effects, anti-diabetic/blood sugar lowering effects, liver health benefits, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Feeding a 5% mushroom powder to rats with high blood cholesterol levels reduced their plasma total cholesterol by 28%, LDL-cholesterol by an amazing 55%, and triglycerides by roughly 34%. This effect is related to decreased absorption and synthesis of cholesterol, and an increase in cholesterol breakdown and excretion.

A diet with 4% oyster mushroom significantly lowered blood sugar in diabetic rats. In diabetic patients oyster mushroom significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure and lowered plasma glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides with no change in HDL.

Oyster mushroom contains a potent appetite-reducing bioactive compound, a lectin known as POL. Food intake-suppressing activity of POL was dependent on the dose and a diet containing 0.1% POL resulted in a 50% decrease in the food intake of rats against the control.

Oyster mushroom extract has potent immune benefits. In 20 elite athletes engaged in strenuous exercise and given 100 mg of β-glucan derived from oyster mushroom, there was no loss in natural killer cell activity which would otherwise occur. The placebo group had a 28% drop (Bobovcak). In another double blind study the polysaccharide from oyster mushroom reduced upper respiratory tract infections in 50 athletes under heavy physical training.

Through antioxidant activity, oyster mushroom has an anti-aging effect and they elevated the levels of several internal antioxidants in aged rats to levels typically found in young rats.

Oyster mushroom contains a host of health promoting bioactive compounds: monacolins (same as in red yeast rice), lipids, sterols, lipophilic vitamins, B vitamins, mono-, oligo- and polysaccharides, amino acids, peptides, and some enzymes.

Draco supplies a pleasant tasting full spectrum, water soluble, extract of Oyster Mushroom standardized to 10% polysaccharides for your functional food, beverage, and supplement formulating needs.

Strawberry Extract

Anti-aging Bioactive with UV-A Protection

  • UV-A radiation induces lesions in DNA

  • Generates free radicals

  • Photoprotective activity in human dermal fibroblasts exposed to UV-A radiation

  • Increases cellular viability and diminishes DNA damage

  • Strawberry polyphenols are strong antioxidants

  • Anti-inflammatory

Aging of the skin is accelerated by exposure to UV-A from the sun. Although the UV-B portion causes sunburn and dry or leathery skin, it is not the part of the UV spectrum known to cause DNA damage.

The UV-A part of sunlight has a more insidious effect by not burning the skin or causing visible redness but rather has the ability to cause DNA damage. UV-A is used in tanning salons at higher concentrations since it is less likely to burn the skin, and UV-A can easily travel through glass, whereas UV-B does not.

Exposure to UV-A radiation causes lesions in DNA and generates free radicals that lead to an increased aging rate of the skin, and skin cancer.

Strawberry polyphenols and anthocyanins have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities that protect human dermal fibroblasts against UV-A radiation.

A placebo controlled study found that strawberry extract had good photo-protective activity in fibroblasts derived from human cell lines exposed to UV-A radiation by increasing cellular viability and reducing DNA damage (Giampieri).

Although UV sunblock agents might block part of UV-A it does nothing to provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection to the skin.

Make sure your latest cosmetic formulation or sun screen contains the benefits of strawberry extract for added protection from the sun.

Draco supplies a full spectrum, water soluble, bioavailable Strawberry, 20:1 extract for all your formulating needs and can also provide a custom extract standardized to polyphenols.

Medicinal Mushrooms for Cold and Flu Season. Licorice Root for Skin

Anti-viral Medicinal Mushrooms for the Cold and Flu Season

by Brien Quirk

Director of R & D

Medicinal mushrooms:

  • Key ingredients for cold season support products.

  • Significant immune boosting effects

  • Potent anti-viral activity against flu viruses

  • Block 2 major pathways of viral infection

  • Heavy Hitters: Reishi, Shiitake, Phellinus, Turkey Tail, Oyster, Maitake, and Cordyceps

For the upcoming Cold and Flu season, there are many existing over-the-counter (OTC) and natural remedies that treat superficial or surface symptoms. There is still a need in the marketplace though for cold and flu remedies that can dig deeper, helping to knock out the causative virus.  Medicinal mushrooms have been found to be a source of anti-viral bioactives, in addition to their well known ability to boost immunity. An effective support product is especially important for the growing number of people who do not feel comfortable with getting flu shots.

One of the main pathways the flu virus causes illness is via two enzymes, one called neuraminidase (N), and the other hemagglutinin (H), which are large glycoproteins on the outside of the viral particle. Neuraminidase is involved in the release of virus offspring from infected cells, while hemagglutinin is a lectin that helps bind the virus to host cells. Neuraminidase also works to facilitate the mobility of viral particles through the respiratory tract mucus membrane.

Many immune support medicinal mushrooms have been found to inhibit the neuraminidase pathway, which is the same mechanism as Tamiflu®. The  mushrooms that have known neuraminidinase inhibitory effects include Reishi, Maitake, Shiitake, Cordyceps, and Phellinus baumii.

Studies done on medicinal mushrooms have had quite promising results. A recent study of Reishi found that 2 of the mushroom’s triterpenoids, ganoderic acid T-Q and TR are inhibitors of two different neuraminidases, H5N1 and H1N1 (Zhu, 2015).

Phellinus baumii, known as Song Gen in China, is used traditionally for the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, liver and heart diseases, and stomach ailments. Five polyphenols (hispidin, hypholomine B, inoscavin A, davallialactone, and phelligridin) isolated from the fruiting bodies inhibited neuraminidase activity for viral types H1N1, H5N1, and H3N2. Phellinus reduced the amount of virally-induced cell damage as determined by a cell-based assay (Hwang 2015).

Cordyceps contains Cordycepin, which has antiviral activity against selected viruses, including influenza virus, (HIV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) (Ryu, 2014).

A study of mushrooms with antiviral activity against influenza virus type A (serotype H1N1) determined that Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus), Enokitake (Flammulina velutipes), and Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) were effective active inhibitors.  Turkey Tail mushroom was noted to have a high therapeutic index and was even suggested by the scientists as a “promising material for the pharmaceutical industry as an anti-influenza and antiherpetic agent with low toxicity” (Krupodorova).

A Russian study similarly found antiviral action for Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, and Agaricus brasiliensis with their metabolites having a direct antiviral effect on influenza virus, and herpes simplex virus types I and II. In addition, the metabolites were found to work on a secondary pathway of increased immunity against the viruses (Avtononmova). Maitake mushroom has anti-viral activity through an increase in production of TNF-alpha, an antiviral cytokine responsible for the inhibition of viral growth (Obi, 2008).

Mice given an active compound from Shiitake and infected intranasally with influenza A2 (H2N2) virus, had an increase in survivor number, less lung involvement, and a decrease in viral titer in lung tissue. The actives in Shiitake protect mice against developing an infection and confer significant antiviral effects (Suzuki, 1979).

Several mushrooms have proven anti-viral activity against influenza virus and can be formulated into a wide array of products for seasonal support.  Other anti-viral botanicals to consider for your formulas are Isatis Root, Black Currant, and Elderberry.

Draco offers medicinal mushrooms as potent extracts – standardized to the important immune active polysaccharides. We can make seasonal support mushroom pre-blends, and we also offer custom formulation for your product development needs.

Licorice Root for Skin Tone and Pigmentation Lightening

  • Effective, low concentrations for skin lightening

  • Licorice root reduces skin inflammation

Licorice root has skin lightening effects and is used for reducing skin inflammation due to its powerful but safe steroid-like compounds.

In one study, five different flavonoids were isolated from licorice and found to have skin lightening effects through tyrosinase inhibition. The isolated flavonoids with this activity in the Glycyrrhiza uralensis species were identified as liquiritin, licuraside, isoliquiritin, liquiritigenin. The flavonoids had IC50 values of 0.072, 0.038, and 0.0258 mM, respectively.

The results suggest that the three flavonoids in licorice, licuraside, isoliquiritin, and licochalcone A, have very powerful effects for skin depigmentation or skin tone products (Fu, 2005).

Draco supplies a licorice extract for personal care formulations.

Reishi Mushroom and Honeysuckle

The Tranquilizing and Immune Supporting Effects of Reishi Mushroom

by Brien Quirk

Director of R & D

  • Neuro-immune effects induce sleep via serotonin

  • Increased sleep time, and non-REM sleep

  • Clinical effects in neurasthenia (mental fatigue)

  • Immune support for athletes

  • Adjuvant immune therapy

  • Bronchial cough

Reishi is known historically as the “mushroom of immortality” and the “elixir of life” in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The botanical name is Ganoderma lucidum  and in Chinese it is known by the name Ling Zhi. Reishi is a hard polypore mushroom that grows on a variety of hardwood trees such as white oak or maple. The mushroom is edible and soft when it is fresh, but becomes very hard upon drying. It typically has a red varnished appearance, and is found in other colors including purple, white, yellow, and black.

In TCM, Reishi is considered a Shen tonic for tonifying the spirit ( mind) and is used for removing tumors, treating deficiency fatigue, insomnia, neurasthenia (mental fatigue), and bronchial cough. It is known to have tranquilizing effects, improve memory, promote agility, and lengthen life span. The fruiting body, mycelia and spores of Ganoderma lucidum contain approximately 400 different bioactive compounds which mainly include triterpenoids, ganoderic acids, polysaccharides, nucleotides, sterols, steroids, fatty acids, proteins/peptides and trace elements.

Reishi is used as a tranquilizing agent based on its “An-Shen” properties which in TCM  is indicated for the treatment of restlessness, insomnia, and palpitation. In a study of how reishi influenced sleep, it was determined that the mechanism of action was related to the polysaccharides affecting an immune pathway related to TNF-alpha (Cui). When reishi was given for 3 days to mice, it significantly increased total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement. TNF-alpha levels were significantly increased in blood serum, the hypothalamus, and in the dorsal raphe nucleus, a part of the brain where serotonin is synthesized. The raphe nucleus has the function of filtering of incoming neural inputs during sleep. The novel hypnotic immune effect of reishi is a unique neuro-immune function.

In another brain related area of health, Reishi polysaccharide extract had mood and emotional health supporting effects. A study treating 132 patients for neurasthenia, which is type of mental fatigue related to depression, showed a 51.6% improvement in the reishi treatment while only 24.6% improved in the placebo group (Gao).

Reishi polysaccharide fractions have potent immune stimulating effects and documented anti-tumor activity. Reishi’s effect on Immune function was tested in 34 advanced-stage cancer patients given 1800 mg of reishi extract three times daily for 12 weeks. The treatment resulted in a significant increase in concentrations of plasma immune factors and a significant increase in natural killer cell activity, an important immune function for fighting tumors, viruses, and other invaders (Gao, 2003). Its potent anti-tumor effects have been documented in mice resulting in a 60% inhibition of sarcoma tumor growth (Zhang 2010).

A study that measured immune function in football players who were subjected to the stress of a 28-day high altitude training regimen. Reishi significantly improved T lymphocytes levels in the players subjected to intense physical activity and exposure to hypoxia (low oxygen levels). The increased levels of T lymphocytes improved cell-mediated immune function in the players (Zhang).

Draco supplies a full spectrum, water soluble, bioavailable extract of Reishi standardized to 10% polysaccharides for all of your formulating needs.

The flavonoid luteolin, abundant in Honeysuckle has valuable skin bioactive effects

  • Protection against photoaging (Kim)

  • Reduction in skin redness from UV exposure

  • Skin cooling to reduce thermal effects of the sun

  • Luteolin: anti-inflammatory for UV exposed skin

  • Luteolin penetrates deep into the skin

  • Antiaging effect reduces enzymatic damage of collagen by glucose (AGES)

In traditional Chinese medicine Japanese Honeysuckle is a beautiful and fragrant flowering plant used for its cooling, anti-inflammatory effects in a wide variety of inflammatory (heat) and infectious conditions. One of the active compounds found abundantly in Japanese Honeysuckle leaf and flower is the flavonoid luteolin, which has bioactive skin effects.

These effects include:

  • anti-inflammatory properties for UV exposed skin (Wolfle)
  • reduced enzymatic damage of collagen for antiaging (Hwang)
  • protection against photoaging (Kim)
  • reduction in skin redness from sunburn/UV exposure (Casetti)
  • skin cooling properties to reduce thermal effects of the sun (Papaliadis).

For highly effective results, Luteolin penetrates deep into the skin when used in the right type of ingredient formulation, according to studies showing this bioactive to be bioavailable to skin cells (Seelinger; Merfort).

Draco supplies a full spectrum, water soluble, Japanese Honeysuckle extract standardized to 10% caffeoylquinic acid for all of your personal care formulating needs.

Turkey Tail Mushroom and Arnebia Oil

Turkey Tail Mushroom
Safe, Powerful Immunity Builder

by Brien Quirk
Director of R & D

• Water extract rich in polysaccharides
• Powerful immune support
• Powerful water-soluble immune actives: PSK and PSP
• PSK and PSP are well absorbed orally
• Analgesic – good pain relief
• Supports fat loss, based on cell studies and human clinical

Turkey Tail Mushroom (TTM) has been extensively studied in other countries including Japan and China for its multiple anticancer effects and immune-restoring properties. It is one of the most common polypore medicinal mushrooms in the northern forests of China, Japan, Europe, the US and Canada, and is known in China and Japan as Yun Zhi and Kawaratake, respectively.

TTM, known botanically as Trametes versicolor, syn. Coriolus versicolor, is a medicinal mushroom widely prescribed in China for the prevention and treatment of cancer and infections. Clinically the aqueous extract displays a wide range of biological activities, including stimulating effects on various immune cells and inhibition of cancer growth (Chu). In traditional Chinese medicine, TTM is used to reduce phlegm, clear dampness (fluid accumulation, infection), heal pulmonary conditions, strengthen the musculature, increase energy, and support the chronically ill (Yang, Jong, Ying). It is also used for infections and inflammation of the upper respiratory, urinary and digestive tracts.

TTM contains two well-known protein-bound polysaccharides, known as PSK (Polysaccharide-K) and PSP (Polysaccharide-Peptide) which are some of the most promising immune factors known. These complexes induce gene expressions of several immune messengers and receptors (Ooi). PSK significantly extended survival at five years or beyond treatment in several cancers. The active PSP significantly improved the quality of life, gave measurable pain relief, and enhanced immune status in 70-97 percent of patients (Kidd).

Oral treatment with PSK led to a significant decrease in the cancer recurrence rate and increases in disease-free survival. The polysaccharides and polysaccharide-protein complexes activate many kinds of immune cells. Prostate tumors were completely blocked though oral PSP (Luk).

PSK has many bioactive effects, andprevents the loss of immune response with aging that often leads to cancer (Matsunaga). Tumors are known to depress immune function, which prevents the body’s immune system from killing the tumors. PSK given orally boosted killer T cells and competed with immunosuppressive substances in tumors. After oral dosing of PSK to rats, small and large molecular substances appeared in the blood serum showing that large molecular weight immune compounds were being absorbed (Tsukagoshi).

PSP increases interferon alpha and gamma in white blood cells 4 to 8 times higher than controls (Li). PSK expresses SOD activity and enhanced cell activity about 7-8 times the normal levels. Cancer cells are low in SOD which is thought to be related to cancer progression (Kobayashi).

TTM has other clinically studied benefits. Pain killing or analgesia can be induced by PSP through its interaction with receptors in the brain (Gong). Treatment with TTM extract relieved the symptoms of IBD. A compound in TTM known as ternatin isolated from the mushroom inhibits fat formation in fat cells. In a human clinical study for immune effects, it not only improved immunity but also helped decrease percent body fat (Tsang).

Draco manufactures a Full Spectrum Turkey Tail extract standardized to 25% polysaccharides using a proprietary water extraction process, guaranteeing high levels of immune active polysaccharides such as PSP and PSK. Please request ordering information and minimum quantities.

Arnebia Oil
for Topical Arthritis, Wound Healing, and Varicose Veins

• Anti-inflammatory and anti-redness
• Acne control from anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects
• Relieves swelling
• Helps with wound healing, tissue trauma, and bruising
• Anti-microbial against warts
• Might help prevent varicose veins

Arnebia can help control acne because of its potent anti-microbial effects according to traditional Chinese medicine. It has been shown to be effective against a wide range of bacteria, including dangerous skin pathogens including MRSA Staph infection. Its anti-inflammatory effects have made it effective for treating acne rosacea which is not caused by bacteria or over-active sebaceous glands, but is related to inflammation processes that cause blood vessel damage and enlargement.

As a topical arthritis rub, Arnebia inhibits COX2 in sore joints. The activity shown by different extracts was comparable to that of the reference drug ibuprofen (Kaith; Subbaramaiah).

For anti-edema effects, Arnebia euchroma aqueous root extract blocked tissue swelling with 61.2% inhibition of comparable to that of the reference drug ibuprofen (50 mg/kg, (Kaith).

To relieve redness, swelling, trauma/tissue injuries, its active constituent Shikonin can inhibit COX 2 enzymes in skin cells. Inflammation in skin leads to redness, wrinkling, pigmentation and other skin damage (Subbaramaiah). Shikonin from Arnebia reduces biosynthesis of leukotrienes that cause redness and swelling (Wang).

For healing diabetic wounds, bedsores, and other wounds, Shikonins accelerates wound healing, capillary vessel number and collagen synthesis, along with having considerable antibacterial activity (Fujita). The extract of Arnebia euchroma contains anti-bacterial alkannin, a shikonin that is active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (Shen).

The conditions that lead to varicose veins involve inflammation and vasodilation. Arnebia has both vascular constricting effects (Hu 2004) and anti-inflammatory effects (Wang 1994) which may be helpful to counteract the causes of varicose veins (Wang).

Draco manufactures a high purity Arnebia Oil for cosmetic use. Please request ordering information and minimum quantities.
